Trizonia Island

Trizonia is the largest island in the Gulf of Corinth with an area of 2.5 square kilometers and the only one that is inhabited. They belong to the Prefecture of Fokida and under the Municipality of Dorida. For the origin of the name of the island, three opinions prevail. According to the first, it was named after the homonymous insect. According to the second view, the name is a corruption of "trionisia", a name that described the complex of Trizonia, which includes three main islands (Agios Ioannis, Planemi and Prasoudi), while according to the third view the name comes from the three zones, i.e. the three access points to the island.

In its center dominates the picturesque and perfectly protected natural port, formed in recent years into a marina for pleasure boats, which sail in the Corinthian and follow the route Piraeus-Lefkada, stopping for the night. Its highest point, Aetorachi, is at an altitude of 106 meters above sea level. The island has three beaches. The largest, with its reddish sandy beach, is located at Pounta, 2 km southeast of the port. Two more small beaches called Aspra Halikia and Kapsale. They are located on the south and west side of the island, respectively, facing the Peloponnese. The island's vegetation includes olives, almond trees, vines, prickly pears, cypress trees, thick sedges, holly trees and eucalyptus trees.

At the same time, during the period when Aristotle Onassis was looking to buy an island of his own, he was constantly visiting Trizonia and looking for a way to acquire them. Some older they still remember his visits with the yacht "Christina" and the seaplane. The Greek Croisus, however, no matter how hard he tried, did not succeed in acquiring this small Corinthian island and set sail for Scorpio.
