Proussos is one of the most popular destinations in Evrytania. It is a traditional village located in the southwestern part of Evrytania.
Going towards Proussos you will come across the picturesque villages of Klaussi, Megalo and Mikro Chorio as well as Gavros.
The monastery of Panagia tis Prousiotissa is right out of a fairy tale. strong> stands on the precipice of Prusus. The landscape is eerie. The monastery was founded in 829-842 AD and is associated with the appearance of the holy icon of the Virgin Mary from Bursa of Bithynia in Asia Minor. A miraculous icon is kept in the church which is a pole of attraction for thousands of believers.
According to tradition the stars on the icon were dedicated to the Virgin Mary by Karaiskakis. The monastery houses a museum with manuscript codices, rare books, sacred vessels, reliquaries, chalices and a sword from 1821.
Over the centuries, the monastery received many attacks, with the last destruction in 1944 by the Germans.
The historical museum of the Proussos Monastery operates inside the monastery with important exhibits, such as images from the 15th century, handwritten codices, the chariots of Karaiskakis.
Just opposite the monastery on a hill is built the clock of the Monastery. Under the clock is the museum of Greek letters of Roumeli, where a hidden school operated in 1821.
Black Cave Gorge
The Black Cave gorge is located in Kastania. In the gorge you can meet a 10 meter high waterfall. The route ends at Mavri Spilia, which was the refuge of the inhabitants during the period of the Turkish occupation and beyond.
Accommodation
In the prefecture of Evrytania and its capital, Karpenissi, you can book a room in one of the hotels or rooms for rent. But also the entertainment options throughout the area are plentiful. Restaurants, taverns, museums, nature activities and many water mills. There you can see the traditional process of grinding wheat, barley and corn.
